Our dried Sea Buckthorn Berry Powder is from organically grown plants cultivated under the wonderful Spanish sun and is a fantastic way to get your Whole Food vitamin C. We highly recommend encapsulating the powder and taking it as a vitamin C supplement especially during the winter months. We sometimes add the powder directly to smoothies, adding a tart taste to our morning wake-up beverage! The entire berry is dried and then carefully milled into a powder.  

The tree/bush itself grows best in areas north of the 45th parallel with dry climates and in sandy soil. Needing full sun during the growing season it is drought tolerant and needs little fertilizer. If you are thinking of growing them yourself you will need both the male and female mature plants in cohabitation in the same area if you want to see the plants give fruit. Sea buckthorn will not tolerate wet climates. The leaves and bark are also of use when used as a tea.

• The fruit of the Sea Buckthorn plant has a VERY high vitamin C content – in a range of 114 to 1550 mg per 100 grams with an average content (695 mg per 100 grams) about 15 times greater than oranges (45 mg per 100 grams) – placing sea buckthorn fruit among the most enriched plant sources of vitamin C on the planet. The fruit also contains dense amounts of carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, dietary minerals, β-sitosterol and polyphenols. Flavonols were found to be the predominating polyphenols while phenolic acids and flavan-3-ols (catechins) represent minor components. Of the seven flavonols identified, isorhamnetin 3-O-glycosides were highest quantitatively.
